Hoogmoed / Hubris (2023)
Many of my happiest and/or most vivid memories take place amidst nature. I vividly remember how the Ash trees in front of our house towered over me in the evening sun, or how when i was younger, my parents, my sister and I would lay in the grass on the outskirts of town to try and catch a falling star.
It’s that upward perspective, eyes to the sky, that continues to bring me the most lasting impressions and never fails to remind me of my own humanity. That overwhelming feeling of futility or vanity in the light of nature around us and the ever-elusive scale of everything beyond that.
Thát’s the feeling that i’ve tried to convey in this Virtual Reality-experience. I’ll try to confront you with your own feeble humanity. So please, leave that superiority-complex by the door, throw your hybris out the window and surrender to the magic of that which we know- but don’t master. The mystery of what we do not (yet) understand, and the magic of everyday life.
Feet planted firmly on the uneven ground,
Take your time.
This one also went through a multitude of iterations before turning into what it is now. It wasn’t received particularly well, sadly, and put me off of venturing further into VR because of its inability to stand on its own in an exhibition.
